History
In 1921, Frederick Fuerste, Sr., MD received his medical degree from the State University of Iowa. His wife, June Brown Fuerste, received her nursing degree from the same institution. Dr. Fuerste, Sr. went on to complete residencies from the University of Chicago in Otolaryngology in 1929 and in Ophthalmology in 1930. They settled in Dubuque, Iowa and began a thriving Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat practice in 1932.
In 1953, Frederick Fuerste, Jr., MD joined his father’s practice. He had received undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Iowa. He interned at The Cook County Hospital and Jail in Chicago, Illinois. He was a naval physician at the Veteran’s Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he met his wife, Marion Fuerste, a registered operating room nurse. She received her nursing degree from Augustan School of Nursing in Chicago, Illinois. They married in 1948 and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Frederick completed his Ophthalmology residency at Milwaukee County. Later, after residency, they headed to Washington University in St. Louis, where Frederick completed fellowship training.
After returning to Dubuque, Iowa in 1953, Frederick and Marion built the small family practice into the current Fuerste Eye Clinic.
Frederick and Marion raised six children. Three of their children followed in their father’s career path as ophthalmologists. Together with their father, Gretchen Fuerste, MD, F. Hunter Fuerste, MD, and C. Rommel Fuerste, MD, established the current Fuerste Eye Clinic on John F. Kennedy Road in Dubuque.

Gretchen Fuerste, MD retired from practice in 2018.
Rommel Fuerste, MD retired from practice in 2022.
The current Fuerste Eye Clinic doctors are continuing the legacy of exceptional medical and surgical eye care in Dubuque and the Tri-State area.
